Description
The Motion 20i is a compact floorstanding speaker from MartinLogan, designed to deliver an expansive sound without occupying a large amount of floor space. It is part of the manufacturer's Motion series, recognised for its ability to open up the soundstage beyond the size of the cabinet.
The top of the spectrum is handled by a Folded Motion tweeter, a planar transducer technology unique to MartinLogan that distinguishes itself from conventional domes through its folded diaphragm. The lower end of the spectrum relies on two 5.5-inch aluminium cone woofers, paired with a bass port positioned at the rear of the cabinet. The Vojtko crossover network, exclusive to this model, handles the frequency distribution between these transducers.
The cabinet has undergone fresh development covering several design details: the drive-stabilising dust cap, a stiffened motor suspension, and a low placement of the woofers intended to limit floor bounce, a detrimental acoustic interaction between the speaker and the floor. The exterior finish includes a reinforced baffle and a removable fabric grille.
This model is aimed at enthusiasts wanting a wide stereo image and a well-developed soundstage without resorting to imposing floorstanders, in a living room where floor space needs to remain modest. It sits equally well in a dedicated stereo setup or as front speakers in a home cinema system.
What to check before buying used
The removable fabric grille can sometimes warp with use: check that it clips into place without play and that the fabric shows no discolouration or musty smell. Inspect the Folded Motion tweeter, whose folded diaphragm can mark or crease with the slightest contact, and listen to each woofer separately to detect any suspension rubbing. Finally, examine the cabinet joinery, particularly the corners and the rear bass port, for any knocks or chipped varnish.
