Description
The McIntosh C49 is a hi-fi preamplifier designed to centralise both analogue and digital sources within a single system. It incorporates the DA-1 digital audio module, a feature that allows it to be replaced at a later date to keep pace with evolving digital standards without changing the entire preamplifier.
On the analogue side, the C49 offers 2 balanced inputs, 3 unbalanced inputs and 2 phono inputs, one dedicated to MC cartridges and the other to MM cartridges, allowing a turntable to be connected directly without an external phono stage. On the digital side, the DA-1 module groups together 6 inputs: 2 coaxial, 2 optical, 1 USB and 1 proprietary MCT input reserved for McIntosh SACD/CD players fitted with this same connector. This module relies on an 8-channel 32-bit digital-to-analogue converter operating in Quad Balanced mode, capable of handling resolutions up to DSD256 and DXD384 kHz, a level of definition covering the majority of today's high-resolution audio files.
In total, the C49 has 13 inputs, each of which can be renamed to make it easier to identify sources and configure the system, a welcome feature in an installation comprising numerous devices.
This preamplifier is aimed at hi-fi enthusiasts who own both analogue sources, particularly a turntable, and a range of digital sources, whether a computer, a network player or MCT-compatible McIntosh devices. Its versatility makes it a central component for demanding mixed configurations.
What to check before buying used
The DA-1 module deserves priority checking: its digital connectors (USB, coaxial, optical, MCT) should be tested on every input to rule out any signal recognition or lock issues. Also check the input selection readout and the relay switches, whose wear shows up as crackling or intermittent dropouts. The MC/MM phono inputs, which see heavier use during testing, require particular attention to background noise and channel balance.
