Description
The McIntosh MA5300 is a transistor-based stereo integrated amplifier, the most compact in the range developed by the American firm, both in terms of size and output power. It is aimed at audio systems seeking a high level of sound quality within a reduced footprint.
This direct-coupled amplifier delivers 100 Watts per channel into 8 ohms, or 160 Watts per channel into 4 ohms, this power being displayed in real time on the brand's characteristic vu-meters. In practical terms, this power reserve allows medium-sensitivity speakers to be driven without strain, while maintaining precise control over the sound level delivered.
The MA5300 offers 12 inputs in total: 6 analogue inputs (4 unbalanced, 1 balanced and 1 dedicated to a moving coil cartridge) and 6 digital inputs (2 coaxial, 2 optical, 1 USB and 1 MCT reserved for transports from the MCT SACD/CD series). All the digital inputs are grouped within a DA1 audio module, designed to be replaceable or upgradeable in order to keep pace with the evolution of digital standards.
This DA1 module houses an 8-channel 32-bit D/A converter, run in balanced configuration, capable of handling high-resolution files up to DSD256 and DXD 384 kHz.
This type of amplifier is aimed at a user wanting a complete piece of electronics, able to accommodate both an analogue source with a moving coil cartridge and modern digital sources, within a system where available space remains limited.

What to check before buying used
On the MA5300, test the vu-meters and check for the absence of crackling or cutting out when turning the volume potentiometer through its full range, a telltale sign of wear. Also check that each input works properly, particularly the digital ones, as the DA1 module can develop faults typical of its age. Finally, a slight hum at idle or excessive heat after a few minutes of use may indicate tired power supply capacitors.
