Description
The McIntosh MA7200 is a stereo integrated amplifier intended to form the central element of a 2-channel hi-fi system. It delivers 200 watts per channel and combines in a single chassis the functions of preamplifier, power amplifier and digital-to-analogue converter, allowing both analogue and digital sources to be connected directly without additional electronics.
The unit offers 14 inputs in total: 8 analogue, comprising 5 unbalanced, 1 balanced and 1 phono input compatible with moving coil and moving magnet cartridges for connecting a turntable directly, plus 6 digital inputs, namely 2 coaxial, 2 optical, 1 USB and 1 MCT input dedicated to the McIntosh MCT450 player. These digital inputs are grouped within a removable module called DA1, designed to be replaced by future modules to keep pace with the evolution of digital audio formats without changing the amplifier itself. This module houses a 32-bit, 8-channel DAC operating in a Quad Balanced configuration; the USB input accepts PCM signals up to 32-bit/384 kHz and decodes DSD256 as well as DXD 384 kHz, while the coaxial and optical inputs handle audio up to 24-bit/192 kHz.
In terms of design, the MA7200 features McIntosh Monogrammed Heatsinks, paired with high-capacity output transformers that eliminate warm-up time. It also incorporates the McIntosh Autoformer system, ensuring full 200-watt output regardless of the connected speakers' impedance, along with Power Guard, Sentry Monitor and Home Theater PassThru technologies. A built-in headphone amplifier, fitted with the HXD system, allows headphone listening with a high degree of control. The connectors are gold-plated, and the polished stainless steel chassis is paired with a glass front panel.

What to check before buying used
The removable DA1 digital module is worth testing on each input: USB, coaxial, optical and MCT, as a fault in just one converter of the Quad Balanced DAC can unbalance the sound without rendering the unit inoperative. Also check the MM/MC phono input, which is more delicate than a line input, and the condition of the selectors and buttons on the front panel, which are prone to contact wear with use. Finally, the weight of the polished stainless steel chassis makes it essential to check for any micro-scratches or deformation caused by transport.
