Description
The McIntosh MC451 is a Dual Mono power amplifier designed for the bi-amplification of loudspeakers. It is based on Hybrid Drive technology, which combines a vacuum tube amplifier and a solid-state amplifier on a single chassis, each dedicated to a part of the sound spectrum of a bi-amplifiable speaker.
The tube section delivers power in excess of 18 watts and drives the midranges and tweeters, while the solid-state section, with power in excess of 40 watts, handles the woofers. Both stages work synergistically, each amplifying only its intended frequencies, which prevents one section from depriving the other of power. The MC451 also features a DualView display with two stacked mechanical meters, allowing the power delivered by each of the two sections to be monitored in real time. The unit weighs 72.1 kg.
This more compact format, compared with the MC901 model in the same range, makes it easier to fit into a rack or hi-fi cabinet. The MC451 is aimed at enthusiasts of bi-amplifiable speakers wishing to drive the treble-midrange section and the bass section of their speakers separately, in a stereo configuration ideally using a pair of these amplifiers.

What to check before buying used
The output and signal valves of a hybrid amplifier such as the MC451 wear over time and deserve careful inspection, as does their secure fit beneath the removable metal cage that protects them. Testing both sections, tube and transistor, allows you to check that each delivers its rated power and that the DualView meters respond correctly in real time. The unit's substantial weight, over 72 kg, also means the condition of the feet and structure should be checked after handling.
