The McIntosh MC2.1KW is a monoblock power amplifier, designed to equip high-end installations requiring a considerable power reserve. Unlike a conventional power amplifier housed in a single chassis, this model spreads its architecture across three separate chassis: a positive power amplifier, a negative power amplifier and a dedicated power supply unit.
This design is based on the McIntosh differential Quad circuit, a fully symmetrical architecture. In practical terms, the MC2.1KW consists of two 1000-watt modules, each carrying half of the differential circuit as well as its own power supply. The output modules, for their part, bring together the input and output connections, the meters, the output transformers and all of the unit's controls.
The symmetrical output transformer with bifilar winding plays a central role in this design: it combines the signals from the two power supply modules, which allows their output power to be added together while cancelling out much of the noise and distortion generated by the amplifier's operation. This architecture allows the unit to deliver 2000W on a continuous basis, with peaks reaching up to 8KW.
Such an amplifier is intended for high-end installations where available power and control of background noise are decisive criteria, particularly for driving demanding speakers or configurations requiring a significant dynamic reserve. Its modular three-chassis design also requires substantial installation space and careful consideration of the placement of each element.
What to check before buying used
When buying used, it is advisable to check the condition of the three chassis separately, as well as the correct operation of the meters and the output transformers built into the modules. On an amplifier of this power output, particular attention should be paid to the condition of the connections between the modules and the absence of any signs of overheating, as the separate-chassis design involves specific links between the different units.
