Description
The McIntosh MCD350 is a compact disc and SACD player designed to deliver a high-quality digital audio signal to a stereo system or a home cinema setup. It features its own digital-to-analogue converter, allowing it to function as a complete source, ready to be connected directly to a preamplifier or an integrated amplifier.
At the heart of the unit is a 2-channel 32-bit/192kHz digital-to-analogue converter, paired with a dual-laser diode optical block. This reads the content of each disc twice and stores the data in a buffer, which improves error correction and limits information loss during playback, resulting in a more stable and precise audio rendering.
In terms of connectivity, the MCD350 offers fixed stereo analogue outputs, available in balanced form via XLR and unbalanced via RCA, as well as coaxial and optical digital outputs allowing the raw signal to be sent to an external DAC, a preamplifier or a home cinema processor. All analogue outputs and the coaxial digital output are gold-plated, a treatment that limits contact oxidation and preserves signal transmission quality over time.

What to check before buying used
The dual-diode optical block should be tested on a well-worn disc to check that error correction still works without crackling or freezing. The tray deserves particular attention: a noisy, slow ejection mechanism, or one that struggles to close, often points to a dirty belt or rails. It is also worth checking actual SACD playback, a format more demanding on the optics than a simple CD.
