Description
The McIntosh MHT300 is an audio-video receiver (AVR) designed to drive a multichannel home cinema installation. It handles surround audio format decoding, speaker amplification and video source processing, in a 7.2 configuration, expandable to 5.2.2 or 7.2.4 depending on the needs of the installation.
Its distinctive feature lies in the way its power is delivered: the stated 7x150 Watts applies to all seven channels driven simultaneously into a 4 ohm load, rather than to just two channels as is often the case with other receivers on the market. Each speaker therefore receives the full stated power, ensuring consistent reproduction across all channels during complex sound scenes. On the video side, the MHT300 supports 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz streams, HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision and 4:4:4 colour reproduction compliant with Rec. 2020, with 18Gbps bandwidth and HDCP 2.2 compatibility. On the audio side, it decodes Dolby Digital, DTS 2.0, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, and processes multichannel PCM streams from 32kHz to 192kHz at 24 bits.
The amplification modules can be reconfigured to suit different speaker layouts. The Height 1 and Height 2 audio outputs allow additional external amplifiers to be connected in order to extend the installation to a 7.2.4 configuration, or to boost power on certain channels by removing the corresponding jumper and connecting a dedicated stereo or mono amplifier.
This receiver is aimed at users wishing to build a scalable, demanding home cinema installation, where each channel must deliver real, consistent power, whether for a standard 7.2 configuration or for a future expansion to more channels and external amplification.

What to check before buying used
On a unit of this complexity, it is worth testing each HDMI input as well as the passage of 8K and 4K/120Hz video streams, as certain video switching circuits can degrade over time or with use. Also check that the Height 1 and Height 2 outputs work correctly if you plan to connect external amplifiers, as well as the stability of the power delivered on each of the seven channels at full load. Checking the speaker connectors and any jumpers removed or replaced by a previous owner is also recommended.
