The MP100 is the first preamplifier dedicated to phono playback designed by McIntosh. It is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts wishing to get the best out of their turntable, with the option of using this signal both for a classic hi-fi system and for a computer to keep a digital version.
The unit offers two separate phono inputs, one for a moving coil cartridge, the other for a moving magnet cartridge. Each has six different impedance settings, allowing the preamplifier to be precisely matched to the cartridge used, whatever its model. On the output side, the MP100 proves particularly comprehensive: balanced and unbalanced analogue outputs for integration into a hi-fi system, as well as optical, coaxial and USB digital outputs.
A Mono switch is provided for playing older recordings, generally pressed in mono: it reduces noise and reproduces the signal more faithfully on this type of record. The digital outputs are fixed at 24-bit/96kHz, a resolution designed to capture the dynamics of a track while keeping a reasonable file size when recording to a computer.
An anti-clipping indicator signals when the digital output level needs to be lowered on albums with high gain, in order to avoid any distortion during digitisation. The MP100's chassis shares the same width as other compact units from the brand, such as the MXA70 all-in-one system, the MHA100 headphone amplifier or the MB50 streamer.
This preamplifier is particularly suited to owners of a turntable fitted with an MM or MC cartridge wishing to integrate it into an existing system, or to those wanting to digitise their record collection without using separate equipment.
What to check before buying used
The impedance switches and phono sockets, used every time the cartridge is changed, should be tested in all positions to rule out faulty contacts and crackling. Also check that the Mono switch works properly and that the USB, coaxial and optical digital outputs are stable, as these can sometimes be weakened by intensive use. Checking for the absence of hum on both phono inputs, moving coil and moving magnet, remains essential before any purchase.
