Description
The McIntosh MT2 is an audiophile turntable designed for playing 33-1/3 and 45 rpm records. It complements the range of turntables developed by the brand and stands out through an advanced design that is both electronic and mechanical, combined with an external platter finished in black lacquer and discreetly backlit in green.
The turntable is supplied with a moving coil cartridge whose high output level allows compatibility with both moving coil and moving magnet phono inputs, simplifying its pairing with different preamplifiers. This cartridge is fitted with an alloy moving assembly and an elliptical diamond stylus. The external platter, belt-driven, is made from multi-layered polyoxymethylene (POM) to resist and absorb external vibrations. It rests on a CNC-machined aluminium sub-platter whose mass contributes to a flywheel effect sought for the stability of playback speed. The assembly rotates on a polished and hardened steel spindle, housed in a sintered bronze bearing.
The DC motor, powered by an external regulated voltage source, is fully decoupled from the chassis in order to isolate the records from the motor's vibrational interference. The plinth, made from high-density wood with a black lacquered finish, has been designed for optimised resonance; acrylic plates positioned at the top and middle of the chassis also help absorb unwanted vibrations.
This turntable is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts seeking a complete, ready-equipped setup, compatible with a wide variety of phono preamplifiers, stereo preamplifiers, integrated amplifiers and home cinema processors fitted with a phono input, notably those from McIntosh.
What to check before buying used
Check the wear on the elliptical stylus and the condition of the moving coil cartridge, whose output may weaken with age or unsuitable storage. Examine the drive belt of the POM platter: hardening or stretching results in speed variations or audible wow. Also check the steel spindle and sintered bronze bearing (bearing noise, excessive play) as well as the condition of the black lacquer on the external platter, which is prone to micro-scratches.
