The McIntosh MTI100 is not simply a turntable: it is a complete audio system bringing together a turntable, an integrated amplifier, a valve preamplifier and a dedicated phono stage within a single chassis. This compact format gathers the whole chain required for vinyl listening and connecting external sources, without the need for additional separate components.
The turntable is belt-driven, with manual speed change between 33 and 45 rpm, powered by a synchronous permanent-magnet motor fitted with a two-speed pulley. The fitted cartridge is a Sumiko Olympia moving magnet (MM) type, whose stylus and cantilever assembly aim for an accurate frequency response. On the amplification side, a Class D stage delivers 80 Watts per channel into 4 Ohms or 50 Watts per channel into 8 Ohms to drive external speakers. The main preamplifier employs two 12AX7 valves, while the phono stage is isolated within a protective housing intended to limit interference and unwanted noise when playing records.
The connectivity extends usage beyond vinyl alone: an unbalanced RCA auxiliary input, coaxial and optical digital inputs, as well as a Bluetooth 4.2 receiver with an external antenna allow a television, tuner, CD player or mobile source to be connected. A subwoofer output and stereo speaker outputs complete the set, as does a headphone socket paired with the McIntosh Headphone Crossfeed Director (HXD) circuit, designed to deliver a soundstage close to that of listening on conventional speakers.
This type of unit is aimed at a vinyl enthusiast wanting a compact, centralised system capable of covering both record listening and connection to other audio and digital sources, without multiplying separate components. What to check before buying used
The Sumiko Olympia cartridge deserves a check of the stylus and cantilever, which are often weakened by improper storage of the tonearm. The drive belt, prone to ageing, may need replacing if the speed drifts or a rubbing noise appears. The 12AX7 valves in the preamplifier, being consumable items, wear with listening hours and should be checked for microphony or excessive hiss. The phono stage shielding must remain intact to avoid any unwanted hum.
