McIntosh MX180

The MX180 is the brain of a home cinema installation built from separate components: it handles source switching, audio and video format decoding, then sends signals on to external power amplifiers. Its 15.1-channel balanced multichannel output section gives an idea of its ambition: managing configurations that go well beyond a 7.1 setup, with height channels and two subwoofer outputs.

On the video side, seven Ultra High Speed HDMI ports, five inputs and two outputs, support 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz resolutions, 4:4:4 colour sampling, Rec. 2020 colour space and HDCP 2.3 protection. The list of high dynamic range formats is comprehensive: static HDR, dynamic HDR, HDR10+, HLG and Dolby Vision, including its low latency mode. There are also functions aimed at gaming and ease of use: ALLM, VRR, QFT, Quick Media Switching which removes black screens when switching between streams, dynamic lip sync, 3D video transmission and ARC/eARC support. The two HDMI outputs can work in parallel on the same content or independently on two separate sources feeding two screens.

Audio processing covers the three main immersive families: Dolby Atmos and its Dolby Surround upmixer, DTS-X Pro with Neural:X, as well as the Auro ecosystem, Auro 3D, Auro-Matic and the Auro 9.1, 10.1 and 11.1 configurations. A Pure Stereo mode bypasses the DSP for two-channel listening, and RoomPerfect acoustic correction adapts the system's response to the constraints of the room, a decisive factor as soon as more speakers are added.

This type of processor is aimed at those building a dedicated room or a large listening lounge around independent power amplifiers, and who wish to keep the same control electronics as their speaker set-up and sources evolve over time. The presence of an MM phono input and a DSP bypass mode indicates that it was not designed as a purely cinema-focused device.
