Description
The McIntosh MA8000 is a stereo integrated amplifier that combines a power stage and a complete preamplifier in a single chassis, including a digital-to-analogue converter and phono inputs. It is designed to drive a pair of speakers directly without requiring separate components.
Its power output of 2 × 300 W is delivered regardless of the load presented by the speakers, 2, 4 or 8 Ω, thanks to the combination of McIntosh's proprietary Autoformer and PowerGuard technologies. This pairing maintains the stated power without signal clipping, even into difficult loads. Total harmonic distortion is rated at 0.005%, a figure that reflects a signal amplified with very little alteration compared to the original signal.
The built-in DAC handles up to 5 digital inputs and decodes streams up to 32-bit / 192 kHz, allowing digital sources to be connected directly without the need for an external converter. What to check before buying used
The Autoformer circuit and its switching relays are worth testing at every impedance position, as an oxidised contact can cause crackling or channel loss. The MM/MC phono inputs and the 5-input DAC should be tried individually to rule out any digital switching issues. Also check that PowerGuard functions correctly and that there is no background noise from the potentiometers and selectors controlled by the remote.
