What to check before buying used
The original cartridge is often worn or missing and should be tested, or even replaced, before any extended listening. Check that the three suspension springs are working properly, damping without sagging or rubbing against the chassis, as well as the condition of the drive belt, which is prone to ageing and loss of elasticity. Checking the platter bearing and overall levelling also helps detect any play or unwanted noise.
