Description
The Gyro SE is a belt-driven turntable designed by Michell as a compact variant of the Gyrodec, retaining its constructional principles while reducing the footprint.
The chassis rests on a rigid, inert acrylic plinth, more compact than the full-size base of the Gyrodec. Three suspension towers fixed to this base hold springs that allow the height of the sub-chassis to be adjusted, a mechanical suspension principle designed to isolate the cartridge from external vibrations.
The platter is made from a material chosen for its vibration-damping properties and its acoustic similarity to vinyl itself. Brass weights increase its mass and therefore its rotational inertia, which helps stabilise playback speed and limit wow and flutter.
The motor is physically independent of the turntable chassis: there is no direct contact between them, with only a belt transmitting movement to the platter. This separation prevents mechanical vibrations from the motor from spreading to the sensitive playback components. The solid aluminium feet, designed with a reduced contact surface, limit the transmission of vibrations from the supporting furniture.
This turntable is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts seeking a neutral reproduction and careful construction, without the space required for a full-size model such as the Gyrodec. It suits a setup where playback quality takes priority over footprint.
What to check before buying used
Check the condition of the suspension springs and their adjustment: an imbalance between the three points results in a sub-chassis that bottoms out or a cartridge that is poorly stabilised during playback. Inspect the belt, which is prone to ageing and loss of elasticity over time, as well as the alignment of the auxiliary motor, whose spindle must remain perfectly free and untrue. Finally, examine the platter and brass weights for signs of impact, and ensure the main bearing shows no play or rotational noise.
