Description
The Orbe SE sits at the top of Michell's analogue catalogue. It carries over the architecture and performance level of the Orbe in a more compact footprint, with the same design logic: isolate playback from anything that might disturb it, then keep rotational speed within very tight limits. It is offered bare, without tonearm or cartridge, or already fitted with the Techno Arm tonearm and a Michell Cusis E/H moving-coil cartridge.
Vibration control is organised across several levels. The solid aluminium feet deliberately limit the surface area in contact with the furniture, reducing the path by which vibrations from the support could travel up to the turntable. Above this, the sub-chassis is suspended on three springs and serves as a common base for the main bearing, the platter and the tonearm: these three elements remain fixed relative to one another, with no relative movement, while the suspension dissipates unwanted resonances. Two layers of isolation are thus added to one another.
The platter, 60 mm thick, plays a dual role. Its material was chosen for its damping qualities and for its acoustic closeness to vinyl itself, a choice aimed at neutral reproduction, without colouration added by the record's support. Its considerable mass also gives it strong inertia once spinning, which helps absorb micro-variations in torque.
This stability is complemented by the Orbe controller, the most elaborate power supply the brand makes. It combines a large toroidal transformer, the Never Connected circuit and servomotor-based regulation. Rotational speed is measured continuously during playback and the controller's output is corrected as soon as a deviation appears, rather than relying on a fixed setpoint.
Such a turntable is aimed at the listener building an ambitious analogue chain, in a dedicated listening room or a living room where vinyl remains the primary source. The suspended chassis requires a stable, properly levelled support to perform at its best. The bare version will appeal to those who already have a strong preference in tonearms and cartridges, while the complete version with Techno Arm and Cusis E/H offers a coherent set-up from the outset.

What to check before buying used
The main bearing and the servomotor of the Never Connected controller warrant a functional check, as faulty speed regulation or a worn bearing show up as wow or background noise that is difficult to correct. The three suspension springs should be examined individually: a sagging or replaced spring unbalances the sub-chassis and makes levelling unstable. On a fitted version, the condition of the Cusis E/H cartridge (stylus tip, stylus suspension) and the alignment of the Techno Arm directly affect playback quality and warrant inspection before purchase.
