Description
The StudioTracker is a moving magnet (MM) cartridge from MoFi, a brand affiliated with the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, the historic record mastering studio. It is fitted to a compatible tonearm and converts groove vibrations into an electrical signal intended for an MM phono preamplifier.
Its distinctive feature is its dual-magnet generator, named V-Twin. MoFi states it drew inspiration from the layout of the cutting head on lacquer-cutting lathes, the equipment originally used to cut the grooves of a master disc. The idea is to match the playback geometry to that of the cutting process itself.
In terms of measurements, the StudioTracker covers a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, with a recommended load capacitance of 100 pF and an impedance of 47 kOhms, values that should be observed to correctly match it to an MM phono stage. Its output level of 4.5 mV is comfortable for most preamplifiers on the market. What to check before buying used
The cantilever suspension loses its flexibility over time: a stylus that appears off-centre or a diminished bass response are signs of wear in the V-Twin generator. Check the condition of the diamond itself, which is sensitive to impacts and groove wear, as well as the presence and straightness of the connection pins to the headshell. Finally, check that the tracking force remains adjustable between 1.8 and 2.2 g on the tonearm receiving it.
