Description
The UltraGold MC is a moving coil (MC) cartridge manufactured in Japan, designed by Allen Perkins, founder of Spiral Groove, for Mobile Fidelity Electronics. It fits onto a turntable equipped with a compatible tonearm and replaces moving magnet cartridges for listeners seeking a more accurate rendition of the analogue signal.
Its Shibata-profile stylus and boron cantilever favour fine tracking of the groove, with good reproduction of low frequencies and marked responsiveness on transients. The armature is paired with a neodymium magnet, which delivers high magnetic energy, while the hybrid body in extruded aluminium and brass, also designed by Allen Perkins, limits parasitic vibrations that could interfere with the signal. With an output voltage of 0.4 mV, a compliance of 10 x 10e-6/dyne and a recommended tracking force of between 1.8 and 2.2 g, it requires a load of at least 100 ohms and covers a bandwidth of 20 Hz to 35,000 Hz.
This cartridge is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts with a good-quality turntable and tonearm, as well as an MC-compatible phono preamplifier, who wish to make the most of well-produced recordings, including Mobile Fidelity's own pressings.

What to check before buying used
On an MC cartridge like this one, the Shibata stylus is the element most exposed to wear: it should be checked under a loupe or microscope to ensure it has not suffered any impact during transport or reassembly. The boron cantilever, more fragile than an aluminium cantilever, warrants careful visual inspection to detect any misalignment or bending. Also check that the connecting wires and output pins have not been damaged during any previous disassembly.
