Description
The UltraTracker is a moving magnet (MM) cartridge from MoFi, designed to be fitted to a turntable's tonearm. It belongs to a range of cartridges designed with direct reference to the record-cutting process, seeking to reproduce the physical logic of the head that cuts the grooves into lacquer, such as the one used at Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab.
Its dual-magnet V-Twin generator takes up the layout of this original cutting head, an architecture intended to better reproduce the groove geometry read by the stylus. The body is machined from a 6061 aluminium alloy, a material valued for its rigidity and relative lightness. The frequency response extends from 20 Hz to 25 kHz, with a load capacitance of 100 pF and an impedance of 47 kOhms, values that must be respected for correct compatibility with the phono stage used downstream. The output level reaches 4.0 mV, sufficient for most MM phono preamplifiers on the market.
This cartridge is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts equipped with a tonearm and turntable capable of accommodating an MM cartridge, seeking precise playback without moving to a moving coil cartridge that is more demanding in terms of gain. The recommended tracking force, between 1.8 and 2.2 g, must be set with a stylus gauge to properly make use of the V-Twin generator.

What to check before buying used
The stylus and cantilever suspension of the V-Twin deserve close inspection under magnification: visible wear, dust build-up or asymmetry of the needle indicate a tired unit. Also check the condition of the connection pins (often bare copper) for oxidation, as well as the cartridge's alignment on its mount, which ensures faithful tracking. Checking the actual tracking force with a stylus gauge remains essential before putting the unit back into service.
