Description
The Music Hall 15.2 is a digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) designed to be placed between a digital source, computer, player or other audio device, and an amplifier. Its role is to process the digital signal in order to deliver a more faithful sound image before it reaches the amplification stage.
It is built around a Ti PCM1796 converter, a 24-bit / 192 kHz model with 8x oversampling. This component is characterised by a very low distortion rate and a high dynamic range, stated at 123 dB, two parameters that determine the device's ability to reproduce the fine nuances of a recording without adding perceptible background noise.
In terms of setup, the DAC works in Plug&Play fashion with a PC or a Mac: the computer detects it automatically and installs the necessary driver without manual intervention, which simplifies its integration into an existing system.
The casing and front panel are made of aluminium, a design intended to limit electromagnetic interference that could affect the quality of the processed signal.
This type of device is aimed at a user wishing to improve the digital playback of an existing hi-fi system, particularly when the audio source has a digital output but a limited internal converter. It is suited both to listening via a computer and to any digital source compatible with the unit's inputs.
What to check before buying used
The PCM1796 converter and its analogue stage are sensitive to humidity and voltage surges: a poorly stored unit may show one channel weaker than the other or a slight hiss at idle, to be checked with headphones on both channels. The digital connections (USB, coaxial, optical) and the RCA outputs should be tested to rule out any loose contact caused by oxidation or repeated plugging cycles. Checking the driver on older versions of Windows is also worthwhile, as automatic Plug&Play recognition may vary depending on the system version.
