Music Hall MMF 9.3
High-end turntable with multi-plinth construction, decoupled external motor and Pro-Ject 9cc carbon-fibre tonearm, for silent and precise operation.
Description
The Music Hall MMF-9.3 is a high-end turntable designed to limit parasitic vibrations as much as possible during playback. It relies on the multi-plinth construction characteristic of the American brand, here featured in three distinct layers, each isolated from the others by sorbothane spheres.
The motor benefits from complete physical separation: powered externally, it sits within a cut-out at the front left of the plinth, without any contact with it. Its only link to the platter is the drive belt. This motor is positioned diagonally opposite the tonearm, a choice that allows any vibrations generated by the belt to be absorbed along the full length of the arm rather than being transmitted directly to the cartridge.
The plinth rests on three feet mounted on decoupling spikes, supplied with their cups, and a built-in spirit level makes levelling easier during installation. The rotation of the platter relies on a ceramic bearing combined with belt drive, for smooth and quiet operation. Speed change between 33 and 45 rpm is done electronically, with a simple press of a button.
The tonearm supplied with this turntable is the Pro-Ject 9cc, made from a single piece of carbon fibre. This lightweight, rigid material limits the risk of vibration and mechanical play, while its tapered shape eliminates standing waves along the arm. The platter, meanwhile, is made of acrylic, a material chosen for its inertia and the absence of resonance it provides.
This turntable is aimed at a demanding enthusiast, already equipped with a quality hi-fi system, looking to get the best out of a record collection without compromise on vibration isolation or mechanical precision. It is particularly well suited to a system where quiet operation and platter stability are top priorities.
What to check before buying used
The tonearm and multi-plinth chassis do not forgive careless storage: check that the sorbothane spheres have not hardened or lost their elasticity, which would compromise vibration decoupling. Check the condition of the drive belt (flexibility, absence of cracks) and the correct operation of the platter's ceramic bearing, which should rotate without noise or noticeable play. Finally, make sure the three decoupling spikes and their cups are all present and that levelling via the built-in spirit level is still possible.
