Description
The Musical Fidelity A1 is a stereo integrated amplifier operating in pure class A, with a fully discrete and symmetrical circuit topology. It combines the preamplifier and power amplifier functions in a single chassis, with an RCA phono input compatible with MM/MC cartridges, five RCA line inputs, a fixed tape out output and a variable pre out output.
The output stage delivers 25 W per channel into 8 ohms, with a voltage of 42.5 V peak to peak and a current of 25 A peak to peak, figures that reflect an ability to drive demanding speakers despite a modest rated power. The dynamic class A operation allows the amplifier to temporarily exceed its continuous class A current by gradually shifting towards a mode close to class B, without abrupt switching, in order to absorb consumption peaks. Gain reaches 32 dB in direct mode and 42 dB in normal mode, for a signal-to-noise ratio of 82 dB and a channel separation of 85 dB. The frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 40 kHz (+0, -1 dB).
This amplifier is aimed at enthusiasts of smooth, full sound, seeking discrete class A operation combined with a built-in phono input for a setup with a turntable and multiple line sources.

What to check before buying used
On this class A model, the output components and power supply run hot continuously even at low volume: it is worth checking for the absence of background noise, hum or distortion at low levels, which would indicate ageing power supply capacitors. The volume and balance potentiometers, as well as the input switches, should be tested across their full range to detect any crackling caused by contact oxidation. As the MM/MC phono input is a sensitive circuit, checking the noise level on this specific input is also recommended.
