Description
The M3x Vinyl is a phono preamplifier dedicated to amplifying and equalising the signal from a turntable cartridge, before it enters an amplifier. It features a single input and output, with settings adaptable to both MM and MC cartridges depending on the chosen configuration.
Its input impedance is selectable from 25 Ω to 1.2 kΩ and its input capacitance from 50 to 400 pF, allowing precise adjustment of the load applied to the cartridge to achieve an accurate frequency response. The gain can be set to 60 or 66 dB, with an additional +6 dB function, offering a range of adjustment according to the output level of the cartridge used. The RIAA equalisation, stated at ±0.3 dB, is based on a passive architecture divided into separate amplification stages, without global negative feedback loop, a design aimed at a more faithful representation of the RIAA curve. The signal-to-noise ratio reaches 80 dB and crosstalk exceeds 90 dB, two parameters that are decisive when working with the very low levels delivered by a phono cartridge. The steel chassis and thick aluminium front panel contribute to the rigidity of the unit and to isolation against external interference.
This preamplifier is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts with a turntable fitted with an MM or MC cartridge who want a separate phono stage, finely adjustable to their cartridge, rather than a solution built into the amplifier.

What to check before buying used
On a phono preamplifier of this type, it is worth testing each position of the input impedance and capacitance selectors to ensure they switch correctly without crackling or intermittent contact. The RCA inputs also warrant checking, as this connection point is the most heavily used during repeated connection and disconnection to a turntable. Checking for any hum or background noise at output level, a sensitive point on this type of unit working with very low signals, is also recommended.
