Description
The M5xi is a stereo integrated amplifier from Musical Fidelity, designed to reproduce both analogue and digital sources within a single unit. It combines a preamplifier and two independent monoblock power amplifiers in a single chassis, an architecture that draws on the design principles of the brand's TITAN power amplifier, adapted here for integrated use.
In terms of power output, the M5xi delivers 160 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 240 W into 4 ohms with both channels driven at 1% distortion, reflecting a good ability to double power output into lower impedances, a sign of a robust power supply. Measured under stricter conditions (0.09% distortion across the 20 Hz to 20 kHz band), output remains at 140 W into 8 ohms and 210 W into 4 ohms. What to check before buying used
On the M5xi, the bias level and matching of the output transistors (two pairs per channel) are worth checking: an imbalance results in increased distortion or one channel being weaker than the other. The large power supply capacitors can lose capacitance over the years, which reduces dynamic headroom into 4 ohms. It is also advisable to check that the protection relays are working correctly and that the RCA contacts of the four line inputs are clean, as these can sometimes be a source of noise or intermittent dropouts.
