Description
The M6s PRE is a high-fidelity preamplifier designed by Musical Fidelity to sit at the heart of a stereo system, whatever the level of the setup. Its purpose is to interface between the various musical sources and the power amplifier, handling selection, level adjustment and signal conditioning before amplification.
Its design is based on a pure Class A architecture, renowned for its linearity of operation. This topology allows it to drive any power amplifier, including over long cable runs, without degrading the transmitted signal. The M6s PRE is also designed to be easy to feed upstream, which simplifies its integration with a variety of sources.
The range of inputs covers both traditional sources and modern digital sources. There is a phono stage compatible with MM and MC cartridges, two balanced inputs, three line-level inputs, a dedicated tape recording input/output loop, as well as a digital USB socket. Bypass options for home cinema integration are available on the balanced inputs and on the line-level inputs.
This preamplifier is aimed at hi-fi enthusiasts who already have a separate power amplifier and want a central hub capable of accommodating a turntable, analogue sources and a digital source via USB. Its input versatility makes it a sound choice for an evolving system, combining vinyl playback with digital listening.
What to check before buying used
When buying used, it is worth checking that the phono stage works correctly, testing an MM cartridge and an MC cartridge in turn if the unit is to be used with a turntable. It is also useful to check for the absence of background noise or crackling on the various inputs, particularly the balanced inputs and the tape loop, as well as the correct operation of the digital USB connection and any home cinema bypass functions.
