Description
The M6xi is a stereo integrated amplifier from Musical Fidelity, designed to drive speakers directly without any additional electronics. It succeeds the M6si, retaining the range's internal architecture while modernising its connectivity, with the addition of an HDMI eARC socket and new optical and coaxial digital inputs, complementing the high-resolution USB input already present on the previous model.
The unit is built around two independent monoblock power amplifiers paired with a separate preamplifier, an architecture intended to limit interference between stages. The stated power output reaches 220 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 320 W into 4 ohms at 1% total harmonic distortion, or 210 W into 8 ohms and 300 W into 4 ohms measured across the full 20 Hz to 20 kHz band at 0.09% THD; the gap between these two measurement protocols gives an indication of the power headroom available in real-world use. The damping factor of 49 and the two pairs of output transistors per channel indicate the amplifier's ability to keep firm control of driver movement, including into more demanding 4-ohm loads.
Vinyl playback benefits from a built-in MM and MC phono stage, with a redesigned circuit board and reinforced shielding intended to reduce background noise and distortion on this sensitive input. On the connectivity side, the unit offers four pairs of line-level RCA inputs, a balanced XLR input, the MM/MC phono input, optical, coaxial and HDMI eARC digital inputs accepting up to 24-bit/192 kHz stereo PCM, and a USB type C input also at 24-bit/192 kHz. An RCA preamp output allows for bi-amplification if required, and the speaker outputs accept banana plugs or bare wire on 4 mm terminals.
This type of amplifier suits an established stereo hi-fi system, combining digital sources, a phono source and possibly a television or home cinema system connected via HDMI eARC. Its available power into both 4 ohms and 8 ohms makes it suitable for relatively current-hungry speakers, in a setup where the user seeks to limit the number of separate units while retaining a wide range of analogue and digital inputs.

What to check before buying used
The chassis, with front and side panels machined from solid extruded aluminium profiles, gives the unit good mechanical rigidity, worth checking when buying used for panel condition and fixings. On an amplifier of this power, it is also worth checking that the MM/MC phono stage functions correctly, often the first circuit to suffer from ageing components or oxidised RCA connectors, as well as the behaviour of the volume and input selector potentiometers, which can develop crackling over time. The HDMI eARC socket and digital inputs are also worth testing with a real source, as these circuits are more prone to faults than purely analogue stages.
