Description
The Musical Fidelity M8xi is a stereo integrated amplifier that brings together, within a single chassis, a preamplifier and two monoblock power amplifiers. This architecture, described by the manufacturer as true dual mono, aims to isolate the two audio channels as much as possible in order to preserve signal separation and precision.
Each power stage has its own heatsink and its own transformer, reflecting a deliberate choice to physically separate the left and right circuits rather than have them share a common power supply. The preamplifier also benefits from a dedicated power supply, and is mounted as close as possible to the input sockets: the circuit board tracks connecting the connectors to the preamplification stage are therefore particularly short, which limits the impedance seen by the signal as soon as it enters the unit. In terms of power, each channel features twelve bipolar transistors, a configuration that allows up to 200 amps peak-to-peak to be delivered, according to the manufacturer.
The construction makes use of carefully engineered metalwork: the front panel is a custom-made aluminium extrusion to military specification, while the heatsinks are also manufactured specifically for this unit, with particular attention paid to their finish and dissipation capabilities.

What to check before buying used
On the M8xi, test each volume and balance potentiometer for crackling or a channel dropping out at low levels, a sign of oxidation requiring cleaning. Also check the condition of the output protection relays, whose contacts can degrade over time, and inspect the power supply capacitors for any bulging or leakage. Finally, checking that both monoblock stages function correctly, channel by channel, ensures that the power symmetry stated by the manufacturer is still maintained.
