Description
The Nu-Vista 800.2 is a stereo integrated amplifier that succeeds the Nu-Vista 800, which remained in the brand's catalogue for several years as its flagship hybrid integrated amplifier. Its replacement is not a redesign as such: as the original display, with its retro styling, was no longer being manufactured, Musical Fidelity chose to carry on the formula rather than discontinue an established model. The result retains the original architecture, with revised styling, a new display and updated internal components.
The distinctive feature of this amplifier lies in the coexistence of two worlds rarely combined. Nuvistor tubes, miniature and metal-cased, are used here alongside SMD electronics and contemporary design methods. This combination was previously unheard of in hi-fi history, and it accounts for the amplifier's particular behaviour: a signature linked to the tube, but measurements in line with the requirements of modern electronics.
In terms of performance, the amplifier claims over 300 watts per channel, a reserve that allows it to drive low-sensitivity speakers or those whose impedance drops sharply, without resorting to a separate power amplifier. This power output comes with unconditional stability margins and a marked ability to cope with difficult loads. The manufacturer also claims very low distortion across a very wide bandwidth, a very low noise floor and a particularly flat frequency response.
When listening, the manufacturer describes a fluid character, large-scale transients and an impression of ease that excludes neither relaxation nor engagement. Imaging between the speakers is highlighted as one of the amplifier's notable strengths, with clearly defined sound planes.
This model is aimed at those building a fully realised stereo system around a single amplification stage, particularly with speakers known to be difficult to drive. Its power reserve makes it a sound choice for large rooms and for listening at sustained levels, as well as for listeners seeking tube-derived colouration without giving up the measured performance of a solid-state design.
