Description

The Musical Fidelity V-CAN is an amplifier dedicated to headphone listening, designed to reproduce the audio signal with as little alteration as possible. It is connected between an audio source and hi-fi headphones, with the aim of providing a power reserve and signal control that headphone outputs built into commercial devices generally do not offer.

Its defining characteristic is its 5 Ohm output impedance. Most headphone amplifiers have an output impedance of between 50 and 100 Ohms, whereas the majority of quality hi-fi headphones have an impedance of around 30 Ohms. This gap prevents the headphones from being driven correctly: the sound produced is coloured, with distortion and a frequency response that lacks linearity. By significantly lowering its output impedance to 5 Ohms, the V-CAN manages to drive practically any headphones available with ease, aiming for reduced distortion and the flattest, most linear frequency response possible.

This type of amplifier is aimed at those who listen mainly through headphones and want to get the best out of them, without going through a full system with speakers. It suits a music lover who is demanding about sound neutrality, as well as a nomadic user or someone in a flat looking for precise, uncoloured listening, whatever headphones are used.

What to check before buying used

The 5 Ohm output impedance is the key characteristic of the V-CAN: it relies on the internal regulation components, which should be checked for continued proper function over time, as should the capacitors, which can degrade with the age of the unit. Systematically test the headphone jack for crackling or a cut-out channel, a sign of connector wear. A check of the RCA inputs and outputs at the rear is also recommended, as these sockets are used every time the unit is connected.
