Description
The V-DAC 2 is a digital-to-analogue converter from Musical Fidelity, designed to convert a digital signal into an analogue signal usable by an amplifier. Its design remains deliberately stripped back: no superfluous elements, a device entirely geared towards its conversion function.
The unit offers three digital inputs, coaxial, optical and USB, paired with a 24-bit / 192 kHz analogue output. This second version moves the USB link to asynchronous operation: the V-DAC 2 then takes control of the data stream sent by the computer, which greatly reduces jitter on this input. This improvement translates in practice into better accuracy and greater stability of the reproduced signal, particularly when listening from a computer.
This DAC is aimed at a user wishing to improve the sound quality of an existing digital source, whether a computer, a CD player or any other source fitted with a coaxial or optical output. It is particularly suited to a hi-fi setup where one seeks to make the most of a higher-quality USB link, without adding complexity to the playback chain.

What to check before buying used
The original external power supply must accompany the unit: a mismatched generic model can degrade the conversion, or even damage the DAC. Check that all three digital inputs (coaxial, optical, USB) are correctly recognised and that the asynchronous USB link works without dropouts or driver errors depending on the system used. The RCA connectors and the USB port warrant a visual check, as an oxidised or loose socket can cause hum or signal loss.
