Description
The NAD PP4 is a phono preamplifier designed to amplify and correct the signal from a turntable before it passes on to an amplifier or hi-fi system. It succeeds the PP3, retaining its philosophy while adding functions aimed at audio digitisation.
The unit incorporates a subsonic filter, useful for eliminating unwanted low frequencies generated by mechanical imperfections in a turntable or a warped record. It also features an analogue-to-digital converter allowing you to transfer vinyl records directly to a computer via a front-panel USB output, supplied together with digitisation software. This USB output has its own volume potentiometer, independent of the standard line output, for adjusting the level of the digitised signal.
The PP4 offers dedicated inputs for MM (Moving Magnet) and MC (Moving Coil) cartridges, thereby covering the two main families of cartridge on the market. An additional line input allows the phono preamplification circuits to be bypassed, making use of the built-in digital converter with other sources, such as a CD player or a cassette deck, for the purpose of digitisation.
This preamplifier is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts wishing both to enjoy carefully designed phono preamplification and to have a simple solution for archiving their collection in digital format, without additional equipment. It will suit users of entry-level or mid-range cartridges (MM) as well as those equipped with moving coil cartridges (MC), which are more demanding in terms of preamplification.

What to check before buying used
When buying used, it is worth checking that the various MM, MC and line inputs function correctly, as well as the behaviour of the USB output's volume potentiometer, which, like any component of this type, may become scratchy over time. Testing the USB connection with a computer will confirm that the analogue-to-digital converter works properly. The external 24V power supply unit provided with the device must also be present and operational, as it is essential to the preamplifier's function.
