NorStone Spider modular hi-fi rack, with black metal structure and 15 mm shelves: each module stacks to build a support suited to the number of components in the system.
Description
The NorStone Spider is not a closed rack delivered as a single piece: it is a system of stackable modules. You start with a Base module, then add as many tiers as the system requires, choosing at each level the height suited to the component it will hold. The whole is therefore designed to order, and can be added to later if the system grows.
The structure is in black metal and each shelf measures 15 mm thick, for a load capacity of 50 kg per shelf. This load reserve is far from incidental: it comfortably allows a heavy integrated amplifier, a power amplifier or a turntable with a solid plinth, whereas many racks force you to reserve the bottom of the unit for the heaviest components. The footprint remains constant from one module to another, 652 mm wide by 603 mm deep, giving a perfectly level column whatever configuration is chosen.
The modules differ only in their height, which allows each space to be adjusted to the actual size of the component it houses:
These four building blocks give rise to the preset configurations: Spider 13, 22 and 23 for compact two-tier assemblies above the base, Spider 122, 133 and 233 for three-tier columns, combining a low compartment for a player or tuner with taller spaces for a ventilated amplifier or a turntable under a cover.
This type of support is aimed at those building their system in stages rather than those looking for a definitive rack. The modular principle means there is no need to buy everything again when a component is added, and the side clearance between the uprights makes it easier to route and access cables at the back of each unit. It suits both a listening room and a dedicated room where the column sits between the speakers or to one side.

What to check before buying used
The metal columns connecting the shelves together are easily lost during a house move: check that each module is sold with its full set of rods and fixings. Inspect the black lacquer on the shelves, especially on the edges and corners, where chips and oxidation first appear after several years of use. Finally, check the levelness of the stack once assembled: a warped shelf results in a column that develops play or leans out of true.
