The NuForce DAC-9 is a three-in-one hi-fi unit that combines a stereo digital-to-analogue converter, a preamplifier and a headphone amplifier within a single chassis. This combination simplifies an audio chain by reducing the number of units needed between digital sources and speakers or headphones.
The DAC-9 has six digital inputs, giving it broad compatibility with different digital formats and sources. It also incorporates a USB audio input, designed to work with x86 computer architecture; tablets running Windows 8 RT are not supported via this type of connection.
This type of unit is aimed at a user wishing to centralise several digital sources around a single centrepiece, capable of acting as a reference DAC, as a preamplifier to drive a separate power amplifier, and as a headphone amplifier for individual listening.
What to check before buying used
The input selector and front-panel buttons deserve testing on every position, as these rotary controls are typically the first to develop poor contact over time. The volume potentiometer should be tested across its full range to detect any crackling at low levels, a typical sign of wear on preamplifiers of this generation. Also check that the USB input functions correctly with x86 architecture, as this module can become unreliable after several years of use.
