NuForce IA-7

The IA-7 is the integrated amplifier from NuForce's catalogue, offered here in its third version, identified V3. An integrated amplifier combines the preamplifier and power stage in a single unit: it therefore forms the central point of a stereo system, between the sources and the speakers, without the need to add a separate power amplifier.

The distinctive feature of this model lies in its internal heritage. NuForce carried over to the IA-7 V3 the circuit design used on the amplifiers in its Reference range, positioned higher in the brand's hierarchy. The manufacturer therefore claims a high level of performance on an accessible model: it is the electronic architecture of the flagship range transposed into a less ambitious unit in terms of presentation.

This version 3 also stands out for its casing. The chassis is made of anodised, bead-blasted aluminium, in a thickness greater than that of previous versions. The aim sought is rigidity: a more massive casing limits vibration of the structure and provides a more stable base for the circuits it houses. The bead-blasted, anodised finish, for its part, provides a matte surface resistant to marks from use.

This type of integrated amplifier is aimed at the listener who wishes to build a coherent two-channel system around a single amplification unit, without multiplying components. It suits a conventional home installation, where footprint and the number of units matter as much as sound results, and suits those who prefer a sober unit to a showy piece of electronics.

When buying used, a few points deserve attention on an integrated amplifier of this kind. Check the volume potentiometer, which can scratch or crackle over time, as well as the source selector, prone to contact oxidation if left on the same input for a long period. Check the balance between the two channels at low level, which reveals the condition of the volume control. On the power side, listen at power-up: persistent hiss or hum can indicate ageing filter capacitors.

Mechanical inspection completes the examination. On this model, the anodised aluminium chassis marks and scratches; the condition of the panels and edges indicates how it has been handled. Also check the firmness of the speaker terminals and RCA sockets, whose nuts and fixings loosen through repeated connections, and the presence of original accessories, including the remote control, which are often difficult to find separately.
