The NuPrime AMG HPA is a headphone amplifier combined with a preamplifier, designed to deliver a transparent signal from a source to the rest of an audio chain. It stands out for its 1 MΩ input impedance, a design inherited from the EVO ONE range of amplifiers and carried over here in the AMG series.
The unit is built around balanced Class A amplification using J-FET transistors, an R-Core power transformer and 26000 µF of filtering capacitance. The dual MUSES72320 volume controller allows precise level adjustment, while the adjustable-gain headphone output tailors the delivered power to the impedance of the headphones in use. Frequency response extends from 20 Hz to 200 kHz (-3 dB), with a signal-to-noise ratio above 100 dB and total harmonic distortion plus noise of 0.05%.
On the connectivity side, the AMG HPA offers three unbalanced RCA stereo inputs and one balanced XLR stereo input, along with an unbalanced RCA pre-out/line output and a balanced XLR pre-out/line output. For headphones, it provides an unbalanced 6.35 mm jack output and a balanced 4.4 mm jack output.
This amplifier is aimed at users with demanding headphones, particularly those with high impedance, who want to make use of both the balanced and unbalanced outputs of their headphones or use it as a source or preamp for a hi-fi system. What to check before buying used
The motorised MUSES72320 potentiometer and its control circuits deserve checking: a channel that becomes unbalanced at the end of its travel, or jerky adjustment, indicates chip ageing. Also check for the absence of hiss or crackling on the 6.35 mm and 4.4 mm headphone jack outputs, which would indicate an oxidised connector or a worn output relay. The 26000 µF filtering capacitance relies on capacitors that lose performance over the years: humming at idle or reduced dynamics should raise concern. Finally, testing all four inputs and both pre-out outputs ensures none of them has a loose connection.
