Description
The AMG PRA is an analogue preamplifier designed by NuPrime to reproduce sources with transparency, while offering the user the possibility of adjusting the low-frequency response according to the system in use.
Its analogue source input presents an impedance of 1 MOhm, a high value intended to limit interaction with the connected source and preserve signal fidelity. The unit also incorporates an «Active Low Frequency and Harmonic Gain» control adjustable across 4 levels, a function designed to adapt bass behaviour to the loudspeakers in use, an approach presented as unprecedented in preamplifier design.
The front panel illustrates the care taken in manufacturing: it is machined from a 15 mm block of hardened aerospace-grade aluminium alloy, cut by a four-axis CNC machine fitted with a diamond cutter, following a 48-step process. The result can be seen in visual details such as a raised 3D logo, a curved surface around the switch and a diamond-cut bevelled edge.
This preamplifier is aimed at audiophiles seeking a central component capable of faithfully reproducing their analogue sources, while having a tool available to fine-tune bass behaviour according to their speakers.
What to check before buying used
The Active Low Frequency and Harmonic Gain selector deserves testing across its 4 positions to check for the absence of jumps, crackling or a mute position. The inputs and outputs, as well as the mains socket, should be checked to rule out any play or oxidation on the connectors. An inspection of the machined aluminium front panel is also advisable, as micro-scratches or impacts on the diamond bevel are difficult to repair.
