Description
The NuPrime PRA-9X is a phono preamplifier that also incorporates a headphone amplifier. It is designed for turntables fitted with a moving magnet (MM) cartridge and sits between the turntable and a hi-fi amplifier or preamplifier, while also offering direct headphone listening from any connected source.
Its phono stage is built around a balanced structure and a dedicated RIAA module. Input impedance can be set to 32K, 47K or 100K ohms and capacitance to 100, 220 or 320 pF, allowing precise matching of the preamplifier to the electrical characteristics of the cartridge used. Phono gain reaches 50 dB for an input sensitivity of 4 mV, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 110 dB and harmonic distortion of just 0.0004%, ensuring a clean signal ahead of any amplification. Frequency response extends from 0 Hz to 50 kHz at +/- 0.2 dB, or up to 200 kHz at +/- 3 dB. The headphone amplifier, fed via the 6.35 mm jack output on the front panel, delivers 560 mW into 32 ohms and 110 mW into 600 ohms, covering a wide range of headphone impedances. Line input gain is 17 dB.
In terms of connectivity, the PRA-9X features an RCA phono input, a ground terminal for the tonearm earth wire, two RCA inputs and an XLR input for connecting other sources, as well as unbalanced RCA and balanced XLR outputs for connecting to an amplifier. A trigger input and output allow its power-on to be synchronised with another component in the system.
This preamplifier is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts with a turntable fitted with an MM cartridge who wish to fine-tune impedance and capacitance settings to suit their cartridge, as well as those who want to switch easily between speaker listening and headphone listening from the same source.

What to check before buying used
With this type of phono preamplifier, attention should first be given to the impedance and capacitance settings: check that the dedicated switches or dials function correctly across all their positions. Also check that the 6.35 mm headphone output works properly, as it is prone to wear from repeated plugging in, as well as the absence of noise or hum on the phono inputs, which is often a sign of a grounding issue or ageing capacitors.
