Description
The Pure AC-4 is a mains power conditioner from NuPrime, designed to improve the electrical quality feeding an audio system. It is placed between the wall socket and hi-fi equipment to filter out disturbances present on the AC line before they reach the electronics.
On a technical level, the Pure AC-4 claims an AC noise reduction of more than 20 dB. It is equipped with 4 gold-plated SCHUKO sockets, a triggered input and output, as well as a circuit breaker providing protection against surges. In practice, this filtering aims to limit electrical interference generated by other household appliances sharing the same mains line, such as fridges, washing machines, air conditioners or LED lamps.
This type of interference has little impact on a mainstream audio system, but becomes noticeable on a high-end installation where a high signal-to-noise ratio and very low harmonic distortion are sought. In this context, a cleaner mains supply can translate into a more open soundstage and better resolution of detail and harmonics.
The Pure AC-4 is therefore aimed at hi-fi enthusiasts who already own a demanding system, on which the electronics (amplifier, DAC, digital source) are sensitive to the quality of the mains power supply. It is particularly suited to configurations where several devices share the same power supply point, in a typical domestic environment.
What to check before buying used
When buying used, it is advisable to check that the protective circuit breaker is working properly, along with the condition of the 4 gold-plated Schuko sockets, particularly checking for any looseness or oxidation at the contacts. It is also worth checking the condition of the mains cable and the triggered input and output connectors, as these are subject to repeated mechanical stress from successive plugging in.
