Description
The NuPrime STA-9 is a stereo power amplifier intended to complement a preamplifier or a source fitted with a line output, in order to drive a pair of speakers directly. It delivers 2x 120 W and can be bridged to mono to reach 290 W, allowing it to be used in a classic stereo configuration as well as in biamplification or mono per channel setups.
Its technical particularity lies in its hybrid topology, which NuPrime describes as Class A+D: the circuit combines a Class A input stage, based on a proprietary technology called Ultra Linear Class A Module derived from the design of the IDA-8 integrated amplifier, with a Class D output stage operating at a switching frequency of 500 kHz. This combination aims to blend the tonal rendering often associated with Class A stages with the speed and dynamics typical of Class D. The unit features a toroidal power supply and rests on proprietary isolation feet, designed to limit the transmission of mechanical vibrations to the chassis.
This type of amplifier is aimed at a user wishing to move a hi-fi system towards a separates architecture, pairing a preamplifier with a dedicated power stage. Its power versatility, thanks to the bridged mode, allows it to drive bookshelf speakers of modest sensitivity as well as more current-hungry floorstanding speakers.

What to check before buying used
The motorised volume potentiometer may develop a crackle at the start of its travel after several years of use: testing at low level on both channels rules this out. Also check for any hum related to the toroidal transformer, sometimes audible with no signal, as well as the tightness of the proprietary isolation feet, which can come loose from the chassis over time. The Class A stage capacitors deserve particular attention if the unit has seen little use in recent years.
