Description
The STA-9X is a power amplifier: it includes no preamplification and is therefore intended to be placed downstream of a preamplifier or a source with adjustable volume. NuPrime has given it a hybrid architecture combining a class A input stage with a class D output stage featuring dual feedback, with the option of bridging it to operate as a mono block.
In stereo configuration, it is rated at 2 x 130 W into 8 ohms, and 330 W once bridged to mono, making it possible to consider two units for monoblock amplification per channel. The frequency response spans 10 Hz to 50 kHz with a tolerance of +/- 0.2 dB into 8 ohms, while total harmonic distortion plus noise is stated at 0.005% and the signal-to-noise ratio at more than 90 dB. The input impedance of 47 kohms makes it compatible with the vast majority of preamplifiers, and its gain of 28.5 dB stays within the usual range for a power amplifier. The power supply uses a toroidal transformer.

What to check before buying used
Start by checking the stereo/bridged mono switching: on this type of amplifier, mishandling the selector with speakers connected can leave traces, so check that both channels deliver an identical level in both modes. The speaker terminals and XLR sockets deserve close inspection, as excessive tightening or forced wiring wears them quickly. Finally, listen to its behaviour at power-up and monitor temperature during extended use: a compact chassis housing a linear power supply with toroidal transformer dissipates little heat but requires clear ventilation, and a unit that has spent time enclosed in a closed cabinet will have placed greater strain on its capacitors.
