Description
The V 40 SE is a valve integrated amplifier from Octave Audio, designed to deliver a continuous power output of 2x40 W into 4 ohms. It features an AMP in input, a REC output and a pre-out, allowing it to be integrated into an existing system or paired with a separate power amplifier. A dedicated Black Box connector also allows for an extension of the power supply system.
The unit relies on a pentode system that stabilises the speaker output stage from an efficiency of 86 dB, which limits the impact of speaker impedance variations down to 2 ohms on the sound. The frequency response extends from 20 Hz to 70 kHz at 40 W (-1/-3 dB), and total harmonic distortion remains below 0.1% at 10 W into 4 ohms. The signal-to-noise ratio reaches -110 dB at 40 W, a result achieved thanks to the work carried out on the power supply unit to reduce noise and hum.
A selector allows switching between three operating modes: On, Eco and Off. The Eco mode automatically adjusts power consumption and reduces power draw during idle periods, a feature that sets this model apart in its category. The no-load quiescent current is 28 mA in low bias and 34 mA in high bias.

What to check before buying used
On a valve amplifier such as the V 40 SE, the valves warrant priority checking: verify their make, date of manufacture and the absence of micro-cuts or background noise, as worn or unmatched valves quickly degrade balance and the stated power output.
