Description
The M-80 is a stereo power amplifier from Onkyo, designed to complement a hi-fi system fitted with a separate preamplifier. It has no built-in preamplification and is therefore intended for use alongside a preamplifier, such as the P-80 from the same range, to drive current-hungry speakers.
The M-80 is built around a three-stage Inverted Darlington Amplifier architecture, combined with class AB operation. Its parallel-mounted output transistors provide an instantaneous current reserve, which translates on listening into better control during dynamic passages. The patented DIDRC (Dynamic Intermodulation Distortion Reduction Circuitry) technology aims to reduce intermodulation distortion as well as high-frequency noise. It delivers 2 x 130 W into 8 ohms and 2 x 200 W into 4 ohms, with a stated frequency response of 5 Hz to 100 kHz, and can drive speakers with an impedance between 4 and 16 ohms.
The internal construction features custom-made 10,000 μF capacitors, premium hi-fi terminals as well as copper bars, the whole assembly resting on an extruded aluminium heatsink designed to limit vibrations. The chassis combines two aluminium side panels with a steel top panel, for improved mechanical rigidity. The unit weighs 13.5 kg and measures 435 x 135 x 345 mm (w x h x d).
This type of amplifier is aimed at hi-fi enthusiasts who already own a preamplifier and wish to upgrade their system with a dedicated power stage, particularly to power low-impedance or moderate-sensitivity speakers that demand current. The A+B terminal also allows two pairs of speakers to be connected.

What to check before buying used
On a power amplifier of this class, the input potentiometer and protection relays deserve careful attention when listening: crackling as the control is turned, or unexpected triggering on start-up, points to a worn component. The large 10,000 μF filtering capacitors lose capacitance over the decades, which can result in background hum or a loss of dynamics in the bass. Also check the condition of the hi-fi terminals and ensure there is no oxidation on the internal copper bars, as well as the heatsink's ventilation after several tens of minutes under load.
