Description
The P-80 is a network preamplifier from Onkyo, designed to interface between your music sources and your power amplifier. It combines traditional analogue inputs with network streaming features, allowing it to cover both vinyl listening and the streaming of online music services.
The P-80's phono circuit is independent from the unit's other circuits and supports both MM and MC cartridges, with an MC stage designed to faithfully reproduce the signal, even from very low-output cartridges. The preamplifier also incorporates a 32-bit/768 kHz stereo DAC, featuring a fanless design that eliminates mechanical noise. The three-piece chassis, with aluminium side panels and a steel top panel, along with an extruded aluminium heatsink, helps limit internal vibrations that could otherwise affect sound quality. In terms of connectivity, the unit offers 3 RCA analogue inputs, an MM/MC phono input, a coaxial input, an optical input, a USB-A port for playback from an external storage device, as well as a headphone output. It is compatible with Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Amazon Music, Qplay, TuneIn, AirPlay 2, Chromecast and Roon Ready, and supports Dirac Live Room Correction Stereo acoustic correction.

What to check before buying used
On a preamplifier fitted with an independent phono stage such as the P-80, check that the MM and MC inputs function correctly and that there is no background noise or hum from the phono circuit, which is more prone to component wear than the other inputs. Also test each digital connection (coaxial, optical, USB-A) and make sure the network functions (Wi-Fi, streaming services) connect properly, as these modules may require a firmware update after a period of disuse.
