Onkyo M-80

The M-80 is a stereo power amplifier from Onkyo, part of the Icon range. Unlike an integrated amplifier, it only amplifies the signal: it is placed downstream of a preamplifier or a source with a line-level output, to deliver the power needed to drive demanding speakers.

It is built on a three-stage Inverted Darlington architecture, a topology aimed at high linearity and dynamics across the entire amplified signal. Class A/B operation delivers 150 W per channel into 8 Ω, and up to 200 W into 4 Ω, with power increasing as load impedance decreases, as is the case with certain speakers that draw more current. DIDRC (Dynamic Intermodulation Distortion Reduction Circuit) technology works alongside this to actively reduce intermodulation distortion, a phenomenon that can affect sound accuracy on complex signals. The frequency response, from 5 Hz to 100 kHz (±1 dB / −3 dB), extends well beyond the audible spectrum, reflecting a substantial linearity margin at the extremes of the signal.

In terms of connectivity, the M-80 accepts both a balanced XLR input and an RCA input, allowing it to be paired with preamplifiers or sources fitted with either connection, including configurations where the balanced link is preferred to limit interference over long cable runs.

This type of amplifier is intended for a user who already owns a preamplifier or a source with a line output, and wishes to add a dedicated power stage rather than an all-in-one integrated amplifier. It suits a hi-fi stereo system where a comfortable power reserve is required to drive low- or medium-impedance speakers, without the amplification stage becoming the limiting factor.
