Description
The Onkyo Muse Y-40 is a stereo integrated amplifier designed to centralise a modern hi-fi setup. It combines digital amplification with extensive connectivity, allowing you to connect a turntable as well as a network source or a television, without going through additional boxes.
The unit is based on a fully digital circuit paired with an Axign Class D amplifier with MOSFET output. It delivers 2 x 75 W into 8 ohms and 2 x 150 W into 4 ohms, with a frequency response of 20 Hz to 30 kHz (+1/-3 dB) and compatibility with speakers from 4 to 16 ohms. This impedance range widens the choice of possible speakers, including models that are more electrically demanding.
The front panel features a 5.46-inch colour LCD screen displaying playback information and an analogue-style VU meter. The Y-40 supports Bluetooth with SBC and AAC codecs, as well as several network streaming services, for direct playback from a smartphone or an online platform, controllable via a dedicated app.
This type of amplifier is aimed at a user wishing to simplify their hi-fi setup without giving up source versatility: turntable, television, streaming or Bluetooth devices. What to check before buying used
When buying used, it is advisable to check that the colour LCD screen, which is often heavily used, is working properly, as well as the responsiveness of the various inputs, particularly the MM phono input and the HDMI ARC connection, which are less frequently tested by sellers. Checking the correct left/right channel balance and the absence of noise at the volume potentiometer is also recommended, as with any integrated amplifier that has already been in use.
