Description
The TX8220 is a stereo receiver from Onkyo, designed to centralise a hi-fi system around analogue amplification. It combines a dedicated power amplifier stage, a DAB+ and FM/RDS radio tuner, and Bluetooth connectivity for wireless streaming from a smartphone, tablet or PC application. The unit accepts a turntable as well as a television, a Blu-ray/DVD player or a CD player, making it a central hub capable of bringing together several sources around a pair of speakers.
The stated output power is 100 W per channel into 6 ohms (1 kHz, 1 %, one channel driven, IEC standard), with total harmonic distortion and noise of 0.08 % across the full 20 Hz-20 kHz band at half power, reflecting a comfortable dynamic headroom for driving speakers of typical sensitivity. The MM phono preamplifier, with a 40 mV overload margin, allows a turntable fitted with a moving magnet cartridge to be connected directly without an external phono stage. On the connectivity side, the TX8220 offers two digital inputs (one optical, one coaxial) for a television or BD/DVD player, four analogue RCA inputs for a CD player or other accessories, an MM phono input, a preamplified subwoofer output and two pairs of screw-terminal speaker binding posts, which can be configured as A, B or A+B depending on the impedance of the connected speakers (4-16 ohms on a single pair, 8-16 ohms on both). A 6.35 mm jack headphone output completes the set-up, with an output impedance of 390 ohms and a rated output of 60 mW into 32 ohms.
This model is aimed at a user wishing to bring several sources together around a classic stereo system: turntable, television, optical disc player and wireless streaming from a mobile device via Bluetooth (version 4.1, SBC and AAC codecs). It suits listening in a living room geared towards music and radio, rather than a multichannel home cinema set-up, as the TX8220 remains a two-channel stereo amplifier.

What to check before buying used
The volume potentiometer deserves a thorough check: crackling or a channel dropout at low or medium settings points to a dirty resistive track, which can be fixed with cleaning but may also signal a future replacement. It is also worth checking that the FM/DAB+ tuner locks on properly (aerial correctly connected, presets stored and working) and testing the Bluetooth connection with a source device. A check of the source and tone selectors, together with listening on both channels at moderate volume, will help detect any ageing capacitors in the power amplifier stage.
