Description
The TX-NR5100 is an AV receiver from Onkyo, designed to centralise video and audio sources of a home cinema setup. It handles both speaker amplification and decoding of the most common multichannel sound formats, in a compact format of 435 x 160 x 328 mm for 8.4 kg.
Its amplification section delivers 165 W into 6 ohms (1 kHz, 10% THD) and 80 W into 8 ohms across the full 20 Hz to 20 kHz band with distortion contained at 0.08%, reflecting available power for dynamic scenes while remaining clean during continuous listening. Frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 100 kHz and the signal-to-noise ratio reaches 106 dB, ensuring a quiet background noise floor. What to check before buying used
The volume potentiometer deserves a test across its full range: crackling or a channel cutting out at low position indicates an oxidised track. Also check that the speaker terminals tighten properly without play or cracks, and that the HDMI inputs correctly recognise a source without flickering or loss of HDCP signal. A check of the rear ventilation is worthwhile, as dust build-up promotes overheating of the power stages on this type of compact AV receiver.
