Onkyo TX-RZ50
Onkyo multichannel AV receiver with Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and 8K HDMI 2.1 video, designed for a complete and upgradeable home cinema system.
Description
The TX-RZ50 is a multichannel audio-video receiver from Onkyo, designed to drive both the picture and sound of a home cinema installation. It receives HDMI 2.1 video streams up to 8K and distributes sound to a multichannel speaker system, while handling tuner and video switching functions at the heart of the installation.
Its output of 180 W at 6 ohms and its ability to support speakers from 4 to 16 ohms allow it to adapt to a wide range of speaker configurations. A total harmonic distortion rate of 0.08% from 20 Hz to 20 kHz and a signal-to-noise ratio of 106 dB reflect a clean sound reproduction, with an extended frequency response from 10 Hz to 100 kHz. On the video side, the HDMI 2.1 inputs and outputs handle 8K UHD at 60 fps and 4K at 120 fps, with ALLM, VRR and QFT gaming functions, as well as HDR10+, Dolby Vision and HLG compatibility. Decoding covers Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD, with Dirac Live room correction and AccuEQ auto-calibration.
Connectivity includes 7 HDMI 2.1 inputs, 2 HDMI 2.1 outputs, optical and coaxial digital inputs, 7 stereo RCA inputs including one phono, as well as zone 2 and zone 3 outputs for multiroom playback. Wi-Fi, two-way Bluetooth and compatibility with Sonos, AirPlay 2 and Chromecast allow the unit to be integrated into an existing streaming ecosystem.
This model is aimed at those wishing to build a complete home cinema installation around a single central unit, capable of handling multiple HDMI sources, multiple listening zones and a multichannel speaker system, without the need for a separate power amplifier.

What to check before buying used
With this type of receiver, it is worth checking that all HDMI 2.1 inputs/outputs work correctly, as some early production units experienced 4K/120 compatibility issues that were later fixed by firmware update. Test each amplification channel at a significant volume to rule out any hiss, crackling or thermal protection cut-outs, and check that speakers are correctly detected across all stated impedances. It is also worth going through the Dirac Live and AccuEQ menus to make sure the automatic calibration runs correctly.
