Description
The TX-SR3100DAB is a 5.2-channel audio-video receiver from Onkyo, designed to drive a complete home cinema system: front, centre, surround speakers and subwoofer. It centralises the video and audio connectivity of a living room and handles both the decoding of immersive sound formats and the distribution of video sources to a television or projector.
Its HDMI 2.1a connectivity, with 4 inputs and one eARC output, supports 8K and 4K resolutions as well as ALLM, VRR, QFT and Dynamic HDR technologies, useful for displaying recent video content and gaming on a compatible console. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ decoding is complemented by HDCP2.3 compatibility to deliver images with a wide range of contrast and colour rendering. On the audio side, Dolby Atmos, Dolby Surround, DTS:X and Neural:X modes handle the decoding of multichannel tracks, complemented by Dolby Atmos Height Virtualizer and DTS Virtual:X to simulate height effects without dedicated speakers. AccuEQ calibration automatically adjusts the sound rendering according to the room's acoustics, and Bluetooth 5.0 (A2DP, AVRCP, AVDTP, AVCTP profiles) allows wireless music streaming.

What to check before buying used
On this type of AV receiver, the HDMI circuits and 8K/4K video decoding chips are the points most exposed to obsolescence or failure: each HDMI input should be tested with a recent source to check proper HDCP2.3 recognition and the absence of picture dropouts. The speaker channel protection relays also deserve a check, by listening to each channel separately at moderate volume. The Bluetooth module and AccuEQ calibration should be tested under real conditions to ensure they still work correctly after several years of use.
