The UHZ65 from Optoma is a video projector designed for home cinema, capable of displaying an image in Ultra HD 4K resolution. It is aimed at those who wish to recreate a cinema-like experience at home, with a detailed digital image and refined colour reproduction.
Its light source relies on laser technology, which replaces the traditional lamp. This approach allows for a claimed colour coverage of 80% of the DCI-P3 colour space, a standard used in the film industry to judge colour accuracy. The laser also provides instant start-up and shutdown, as well as brightness that remains stable over time, unlike conventional lamps which lose intensity with use.
The UHZ65 is compatible with HDR (High Dynamic Range), which widens the image's contrast and brightness range, and supports HDCP 2.2, a protection protocol required to play certain protected 4K content. It also features PureMotion processing, a frame interpolation technology designed to reduce blur and judder on fast-moving scenes, useful for sport or action content.
This video projector is suitable for a living room or dedicated room installation, for regular home cinema use. Its laser source, rated for a 20,000-hour lifespan, makes it a choice designed for extended use without needing to replace the lamp.
What to check before buying used
The laser module itself is very durable, but it is advisable to ask about the number of hours already accumulated and check for any spots or discoloured areas on the image, a sign of a worn optical block. The ventilation drawer and air filters should be checked, as prolonged clogging encourages overheating. The motorised zoom and focus should also be tested, along with all HDMI inputs compatible with HDCP 2.2, since a faulty connector would prevent playback of certain protected 4K content.
